Setting Up a Google Review QR Code That Actually Works

The whole setup, and the one detail most people get wrong:
- Find your Google Place ID (Google’s “Place ID Finder”, or from your Business Profile).
- Build the direct review link:
https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=YOUR_PLACE_ID- Generate a QR code from that link — any free generator.
- Test it from a phone, across the room. It must open straight to the review box, not your general listing.
That last point is the whole game. A QR that dumps the customer on your listing, where they then have to hunt for the review button, loses half of them. The one that opens directly to the star-rating box is the one that works.
This is the technical companion to why a QR code is a signpost, not a collector. That piece is the strategy; this one is the wiring.
Step 1: get your Place ID
Every business on Google Maps has a unique Place ID — a string that identifies you specifically, so the link goes to your review box and not a similarly-named shop two towns over.
Get it one of two ways:
- Google’s Place ID Finder — search “Google Place ID Finder”, type your business name and address, and it returns the ID (a string starting
ChIJ...). - From your Business Profile — the tools inside Google Business Profile can generate a review link directly, which is often the simplest route.
If Google’s own “get more reviews” tool gives you a short link, that works too — the Place ID method just gives you full control.
Step 2: build the direct link
The link that opens straight to the review box is:
https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=YOUR_PLACE_ID
Replace YOUR_PLACE_ID with yours. Paste it into a browser and check: it should open Google’s “rate and review” box for your business, immediately, with nowhere else to navigate.
This is the difference between a QR that works and one that leaks customers. The customer scanned because they were willing now, in the moment. Every extra tap between the scan and the star rating is a place they give up.
Step 3: make the QR code
Paste the link into any free QR generator. That is genuinely all there is to it.
- Keep it simple — a plain black-on-white QR is the most reliable. Avoid the fancy branded ones with logos in the middle unless you test them thoroughly; heavy styling can make a code fail to scan.
- Make it big enough — a QR the size of a postage stamp on a card across a counter will not scan. Bigger is safer.
- High contrast — dark code on a light background. A QR printed pale, or on a busy photo, may not read.
Step 4: test it properly
This is the step everyone skips and it is the one that matters.
Test the printed QR — not the link on your screen, the actual printed code — from a phone, at the distance and angle a customer will really be at. Across the counter. On the bill in their hand. On the mirror they are sitting in front of.
A code that scans from ten centimetres in perfect light but fails from where a customer actually stands is worse than no code, because they tried, it failed, and they will not try again. Test it from the real position, in the real light, on a couple of different phones.
Where to put it
The setup is only half of it — placement decides whether it gets scanned. Put it where the customer is stationary, phone likely in hand, and just been asked:
- On the bill or receipt.
- On the card machine.
- On the mirror, at a salon, where they have sat for an hour.
- Not on the door as they leave — nobody scans while walking out.
And it belongs in your in-store signage as a deliberate, tested element, not a curled sticker by the till.
The line the setup must respect
One thing the QR must never say: any offer in exchange for the review.
“Scan for 10% off — leave us 5 stars” is a printed confession. Google prohibits incentivised reviews, and a QR code offering a reward for a rating is the most visible possible evidence of it. The code links to the review box; the sign around it asks politely and offers nothing.
Set up the link, print the code, and let it do exactly one honest job: remove the friction between a willing customer and the review box.
Static or dynamic: which code to make
Free generators hand you a static QR by default. The review link is baked straight into the pattern of squares. It never expires, never depends on anyone else’s server, and works forever — but you cannot see how many people scanned it, and if the destination ever has to change, you print a fresh code.
A dynamic QR does one extra thing: instead of encoding the review link, it encodes a short redirect that points to the link. Change the redirect later and every printed code updates without a reprint. You also get a scan count — a rough read on whether the card on the counter is actually being used, or just sitting there.
For most single-shop owners, static is the honest default: fewer moving parts, nothing to pay for, nothing that can quietly lapse. Reach for dynamic only if you genuinely want the scan numbers, or you run several sites and want to swap destinations from one place. Whichever you pick, the test in Step 4 is identical — and dynamic adds one failure mode to check: if the redirect service goes down, your code goes with it.
A worked example: the café at the till
Picture a café that prints the review QR on the bottom of every receipt. It is a plain black code, thumbnail-sized — and the owner tested it once, on her own phone, held ten centimetres from her face. It scanned. Done, she thought.
At the counter it fails almost every time. The receipt is warm, slightly curled, held at arm’s length while the customer roots for their card. The code is too small, and too close to the folded edge, to read from there. Nobody complains — they shrug and pocket the receipt. The owner sees no reviews come in and quietly decides her customers don’t care.
They cared fine. The fix costs nothing: a bigger code, printed higher on the receipt, and one honest test from where a real customer actually stands. The willingness was there the whole time; the wiring was losing the yes in the moment. A code that removes friction only helps if it removes it at the exact spot the customer is standing, at the exact second they were asked.
The code is nothing without the ask
The best-configured QR in the world collects almost nothing on its own. It depends on a human being asking first, out loud, in the moment — the code just catches the yes before it gets lost in a search.
So: build the link, make the code, test it from across the room, place it where they are standing still — and then ask every happy customer out loud, and hand them the code.
